Letters and Prayer Sponsors Needed

UPAVIMYou can be in ministry with our Guatemalan mission delegates as they travel to Guatemala City July 6-14 to deepen our friendship with UPAVIM, our sister organization. How? By being a letter or prayer sponsor. To be a letter sponsor, simply write a note of encouragement that the delegates can open and read each day they are there. Notes need to be turned into the church office by July 3. Or email Sharon to have her print your note for the delegates. To be a prayer sponsor, commit to pray for our delegates on any of their mission days. This year’s delegates are Barb Ehst, Debbie and Lexie Faber, Claire and Stephanie Marich, Ina, Ray and Louise Osborn, and Emily Stuba.

Please also pray for the women of UPAVIM as they work to bring hope and services to the people of their impoverished neighborhood, La Esperanza. It is a wonderful opportunity to encourage their work and stand beside them as they struggle for a better life.

Church Wide Day of Service

Please mark your calendars for the Church Wide Day of Service to be help on September 10, 2011. This is a wonderful time for families and people of all ages. Activities will include home clean up for the elderly, phoning or writing those on the prayer list, visiting the children at Almost Home, SOS, and helping out PRC. There will be 3 stations located here at church for scarf making, letter writing, and soup preparation. Lunch will follow at church afterwards. In addition, soup and bread will be prepared and delivered to those individuals who are unable to leave their homes and those on the prayer list. We look forward to you joining us in this special time.

Listen, Link and Launch

Listen, Link, and Launch

  • How can we listen to our community?
  • What are they asking us, as a church to be about?
  • How can we link resources in building new ministries?
  • How can we do ministries that relate to our communities’ needs and aspirations, connecting with others so that we can do together what we might not be able to do or carry out alone?

Listen, Link and Launch is a hands-on experience of listening to a community, finding new tools for listening, combining resources, launching ministries that can involve people who aren’t already part of a faith community. Bring money for lunch, a heart for reaching out, good shoes for a light walk, and creative imaginations for collaborating with others in seeing new possibilities for our Church.

Hola From Bolivia!

We’ve just walked back “home” to our house in Copacabana, after a regional worship service in nearby Iglesia Manko Capak (named after the 1st Incan Emperor and the name of the Province in which Copacabana is located). The Bolivian Methodist Church (Iglesia Evangelica Metodista en Bolivia) is celebrating its 100-year jubilee. Each church district is hosting celebrations of this kind. The 4.5-hour service was unusually brief, probably because Bishop Javier Rojas (the only Bolivian Bishop), officiated.

Easter Offering for Mission

Children around the world have benefited from the generosity of the FUMC congregation. Through your Easter gifts in 2010, we have also supported the following project and mission:

Lee Memorial Girl’s Dormitory, India—a residential school for girls in an area where girls are largely overlooked for education. Nurturing and educating the orphaned and destitute, this school makes it possible for girls to learn not only basic education, but also skills for a brighter future as empowered women.

Street Children Ministry, Cambodia—street children in Cambodia, including children living in orphanages and in poor communities, have limited access to local public school education, proper nutrition, fellowship activities, or opportunities to learn about the Bible. In each of the four communities where our NIC-supported missionary Clara Biswas works, the project has enhanced their education, provided means for fellowship, and filled various other needs to improve the overall quality of the child’s life and teaching about God’s love for them.

The Rainbow Covenant

One of the benefits of being United Methodist is the way we work together to be in mission all around the world.

The first, foundation level of mission outreach is through the “apportionment” giving that is a part of our regular church budget. Through apportionments, a portion of our offerings are used throughout the year to minister through the World Service and Conference Benevolence Funds. The World Service Fund enables our church’s world-wide mission outreach. All United Methodist churches share together in contributing to the World Service Fund. The Conference Benevolence Fund directs a portion of our offerings to mission and ministries within our Northern Illinois Conference, from the inner city neighborhoods of Chicago to the rural areas of western Illinois. All the United Methodist Churches in our Conference in our Conference share financially in our Conference Benevolences.

Rainbow CovenantThe second, “extra” level of mission giving is through the “Rainbow Covenant.” The Rainbow Covenant allows us a congregation to select specific ministries and mission projects for our congregation’s support. There are nine color “bands” of the Rainbow Covenant. To be a Rainbow Covenant church, a congregation first needs to pay its apportionments in full, and then give at least $25 to a mission in each of the color “bands” of the Rainbow.

The various colors each support an area of mission. They are:

  • Burgundy— International
  • Red—U.S.A
  • Orange—United Methodist Committee of Relief
  • Yellow—Children and Youth
  • Green—Northern Illinois Conference
  • Blue— District
  • Indigo—Missionary Support
  • Purple—Local Benevolences and Special Sundays
  • White—Sister Church Relationships.
