Chapel Choir Christmas Concert - Celebrating God's Gift

GiftsThe Chapel Choir will present two performances of "Celebrating God's Gift," on Sunday, December 16 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Experience the joy and wonder of Christmas through words and music as they are shared by this 45-voice high school choir.

Tickets are $10 and available from choir members, in the church office, and at the door the day of the concert. Proceeds will help offset some of the costs of the choir's 42nd Annual Spring Break Tour to New Orleans, LA, March 23-30.

The Chapel Choir has a long and rich history here at DGFUMC. It has led Sunday worship at the 9:30 morning service during the school year since 1960.

For the past 41 years, the choir has participated on a week-long Spring Break musical mission trip spreading God's message in word and song to congregations throughout North America, including such places as New York City, Boston, Denver, St. Simon's Island, Memphis, Pensacola, Nashville, Toronto, Dallas, Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, New Orleans, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and many communities in between. Over the years, the choir has also performed at the Northern Illinois Conference and other sporting and community events.

Despite ever increasing demands on their time, choir members practice Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings following worship in preparation of both the Christmas concerts and tour. Members also give of their time through fundraising and mission activities at church and are involved in numerous activities in school, including athletics, speech, band, choir, dance, and clubs.

Love God. Serve the Hungry. Do the Famine.

Friday November 30th will mark the 50 day countdown to the 30 Hour Famine. All youth are invited to gather at the church to learn about the famine, set fundraising goals, and designate which organizations will receive our fundraising to fight hunger. After our work is done, we'll play glow-in-the-dark volleyball and midnight capture the flag. Spend the night at church with your friends and help change the world! Have you ever had a pie thrown in your face?

CROP Stop SignI haven’t, and as far as I know neither has John Smoke. Unfortunately for us, that is all about to change! You may have heard us engaging in some good-spirited competitive conversations or seen the posters on the church walls with pies surrounding our faces. This Sunday, pies will be thrown. But what’s it all about?

This Sunday, October 14th, First UMC is teaming up with churches and organization all around the area to walk in the annual CROP Walk. This walk drums up financial and moral support for a variety of organizations that seek to fight hunger in our local communities, our nation, and around the world. After hearing about the walk, I immediately knew I wanted to help out and was positive that others would, too. I talked to John and found out that he was positive others would want to help as well. We were both SO positive that we decided to enter into a friendly challenge between our ministries. So, this Sunday, whoever has more students from his or her ministry (for John that’s Kindergarteners-5th Grade, for me it’s 6th-12th graders) walking alongside him or her in the walk, gets to throw pies in the other person’s face.

Confirmation

We feel it is important for young people to work on developing their faith in such a way that it will become a solid resource for coping with the challenges and triumphs of life. The goal of our Junior High Ministry is to build these resources and, in the process, make Disciples for Christ.

There are many ways that the Church community teaches its members how to be disciples. Students are invited each week to explore the Bible, discuss theological topics, and apply components of faith to their daily lives. Seventh graders explore an overview of the Bible through a curriculum called "Echo the Story" while eighth graders explore theological topics and Methodist tradition through a curriculum called "Collaborate."

Students are required to volunteer within different areas of the church community in order to form a more complete understanding of what it means to be a part of an active and vibrant faith community.
