UPAVIM Delegation Itinerary

The five women visiting from the UPAVIM cooperative in Guatemala City have a busy schedule from October 3 to 11. During the week, they will find out about what life is like in Chicago, what activities our church is involved in, and see some of the issues that our society has to address. October 3

  Arrive at O'Hare
• 6-6:30 pm
  Meet the host families at the church

October 4

• 10:00 am-1:30 pm
  Walking tour of downtown Downers Grove and lunch at Pine Cone Cottage.
• 1:45-2:45 pm
  Visit Hillcrest grade school 6th grade classroom
• 6:30-10:00 pm
  Attend football game at Downers Grove South High School (Downers South vs. Downers North, at Downers South) with host families (optional) and other church members.

October 5

• 9 -11 am
  Visit Downers Grove Farmers’ Market
• Noon – 1:30 pm
  Visit Chicago Urban Lights, an inner-city farm
• 2:00-3:30 pm
  Wendella boat ride on Chicago River and Lake Michigan
• 3:30-5:00 pm
  Tour of Millennium Park and Chicago Cultural Center

October 6

• 8:00 am-12:00 pm
  Sunday services, with presentations during each service; reception and UPAVIM crafts sale between services
• 12:00-2:00 pm
  Churchwide BBQ with delegates
• 5:00-8:30 pm
  Movie night at church, viewing 'The Help" (in Spanish)

October 7

  Travel to Rockford, Illinois and visit to Rockford Urban Ministries/JustGoods marketplace.

  Swedish restaurant - Rockford
• 2:00-4:00 pm
  Anderson Japanese Gardens - Rockford

  Tour of Downers Grove First United Methodist Church pre-school

  Lunch in Downers Grove

  Tour of Family Shelter Service in Downers Grove, a domestic violence organization
• 4:00-7:00 pm
  Participate in discussion group and dinner at Aurora University with university chaplain Jonathan Dean and some of his students
• 7:45-8:00 pm
  Briefly attend DGFUMC Admin Council meeting, present short summary of visit impressions to date.

October 9

  Tour of the United Church of Rogers Park

  Visit to Lincoln Park Zoo

  Attend church weekly Wednesday dinner in the gym

October 10

  Shopping for Thursday dinner

  Attend United Methodist Women lunch at the church
• 1:30-4:30 pm
  Participate in volunteer activities at Northern Illinois Food Bank
• 5:00-8:00 pm
  UPAVIM delegates and church members cook and share a Guatemalan meal together at the church
