Our Journeys Together

On my night stand are still three acorns. They are momentos of an afternoon walk with our grandson, through the parsonage back yard to Fishel Park. We’d just read a board book about busy squirrels storing up food for the winter, and sure enough, as we walked we saw squirrels scurrying around the edge of the yard, and felt acorns crunching under our feet. So, of course, it became essential to collect our own little batch of acorns. For years I had seen squirrels and acorns with indifference, or annoyance, but because of that brief journey with Kellen, I now see them with a bit of fondness, too.

We are changed by our journeys with one another, however brief. What had seemed ordinary can become marvelous when it holds memories of life shared. So often, it is only in retrospect that we begin to understand how precious our everyday relationships are, how full each moment can be.

In November, we will gather in worship to look back, to remember the ones whose journeys we have had the privilege of sharing, to notice the hidden gifts in each day, and to celebrate God with Us, “Emmanuel,” here and now.

May our journeys together open our eyes to the One who is “making all things new.” (Rev. 21:5)
