Pastors' Reflections
This Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday and we are part of a culture that associates certain rituals with that day -- notably eating! Chicken wings and pizza are consumed in heavy quantities by individuals and at gatherings -- in fact, Super Bowl Sunday is now second only to Thanksgiving in the amount of food consumed in one day.
In contrast, Sunday morning at our church, we will share in a different kind of ritual with very simple food -- the bread and grape juice of the sacrament of communion. Our portions are small, yet they somehow fill us with renewed spiritual strength. As we gather to share in the sacrament, we also are celebrating a victory -- the victory of the Resurrected One, with us, in us and among us, opening our eyes, our minds and our lives to serving in love in his name.
At our three regularly scheduled worship services this Sunday (8:15, 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.) Jim's message, So that the World May Become Eucharist, will focus on the meaning of communion and is based on Mark 14:22-25.
