"We Gather Together"

One of my favorite elements of the Thanksgiving story is the surprise that the Pilgrims must have felt when 90-plus Native Americans showed up to share in that “first Thanksgiving meal.” The handful of Native Americans who had worked with the Pilgrims through the spring and summer, teaching them to plant crops that would thrive in the soil of this continent, had interpreted the invitation by the Pilgrims to join in a special meal, as an invitation to a “potlatch.” They knew what that was – a time for the community to gather in fellowship, thanksgiving and feasting. And, of course, all were included in invitations to such a meal.

As the account goes, when the Native Americans saw the look on the Pilgrims’ faces, they excused themselves, and went out to bring in an abundant supply of meat -- venison and wild game. There was enough for all – and a true sharing of the variety of experiences, strengths, and blessings that they had received.

Our church will be sharing in two joyful expressions of “gathering together” as we celebrate the national and faith-rooted holiday of Thanksgiving. On will be our “Thanksgiving Eve” service – actually held on Tuesday, November 23 (the “eve” of “Thanksgiving Eve”), at 7pm in the sanctuary. Our chorister choir members will lead us in praise and thanks, and Deacon Nick and Pastor Greta will share Thanksgiving reflection.

In addition, those involved in the Interfaith program – youth from our church and Muslim youth who have been “gathering together” in service and fellowship all fall, will be sharing in a Thanksgiving meal.

And many, many of our congregation have “extended their table” in their hearts by providing food for others through the People’s Resource Center, and gifts of help in the local area through the Thanksgiving offering.

May our “gathering together” be a blessing to us and to others.
