Friday Night at the Movies

PLEASE NOTE:   With our apologies, we have to change the “usual” date once again, from the 3rd Friday to the 2nd Friday.

Continuing our fall Politics in the Movies theme, Don and Caryl Safford will present The Candidate, a compelling 1972 satirical dramedy starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, and Melvyn Douglas. Rotten Tomatoes, giving the film a 95% favorable rating, describes it as “a gritty, documentary-like tale of an idealistic, good-natured attorney [Redford] whose high standards are soiled by his run for political office." Tapped by a political hack (Boyle) to run against a seemingly unbeatable senatorial incumbent in California, this political neophyte at first seems overwhelmed by the political machine that directs his every move. But then, cautiously, he begins to assert himself…with surprising results. Is the theme of this movie timely in today’s political world?  We should enjoy a lively discussion answering this and other questions as well.
