Friday Night at the Movies

Darkest HourWinston Churchill said: "I have nothing to offer but blood,  toil, sweat, and tears." Churchill spoke these famous words during his first speech to Parliament in 1940 as the Nazis were overrunning Western Europe and threatening to invade Britain.

Our April movie, The Darkest Hour, tells the story of those bleak and difficult days in World War II when Britain stood alone against Nazi tyranny. Incredible to us now, Churchill as the newly-elected prime minister faced fierce opposition against his decision to fight rather than make a peace treaty with Hitler. British soldiers are trapped at Dunkirk. King George VI is not sure he has confidence in this new PM. The story of Churchill's triumph in the face of so much opposition attests to his brilliance as a wartime leader almost without peer.

Gary Oldman plays Churchill in an outstanding performance that garnered best actor wins in several award programs, including the Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards. Rich and Sarah DeMink will lead our discussion.
