Ruminating on Results

Last summer, one of my favorite fellowship ministries offered by our church was Wednesday outdoor movie nights. Deacon Wes built a giant screen with a painter's tarp and some 2 x 4s and set it up above the stairs in the back of the church so you could see it from far away. It was so much fun to gather together safely and enjoy movies!

I am very excited that we are doing this again this year! Deacon Wes and Pastor John have put together a fun movie schedule for us. We'll be showing Soul on July 7; The Incredibles on July 14; The Princess Bride on July 21 (an interactive showing!); and Big Hero 6 on July 28. I can't wait to watch with you!

Another movie that I'm excited about this summer is the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights. This show follows the hopes and dreams of the community in Washington Heights. As Usnavi, the main character, says in the very first song, "Everybody's got a job, everybody's got a dream." Throughout the show, we learn of some of the dreams and expectations each character carries with them and see which persist and which are interrupted or transformed.

Have you ever had a strong idea of what your life or the world should look like? Has that idea persisted or shifted with time? What goals and dreams have you carried with you, and upon meeting them, was it all that you had imagined? This week in worship, we'll look at some of Jesus's parables, stories used to teach lessons, and think about what they mean for our hopes and dreams for this world.
