"Pay To Pie" Cleans Up

Katie + Pie John + Pie

This afternoon, it was inspiring to see so many children, youth and adults selflessly step up to the plate, cover it in whipped cream and thrust it in the face of our Youth Pastor, Katie Bartholomew, and our Children's Pastor, John Smoke. As so often in our church, people responded to the challenge with amazing enthusiasm, throwing more than two dozen pies at $5 each, more than Katie and John can possibly have hoped. Even Pastor Greta joined in. At the end, they both seemed dazed by the experience.

The event raised money for two charities that have done so much to alleviate hunger in the local community and around the world, Church World Service and Feed My Starving Children, both of which have been supported by DGFUMC over many years. This was a follow-up to the South DuPage CROP Hunger Walk a couple of weeks ago, in which over fifty church members participated, twenty of them members of Katie's youth group and John's Sunday schools. Over $28,700 has been raised by the walk so far and the eventual total is likely to be over $2,000 more than last year. Thank you to Katie and John for their enthusiastic support and to everyone who participated a couple of weeks ago and today.

Today's event was so successful that there is already talk of a follow-up, but the victims have yet to be chosen. Any volunteers?

Pay to Pie

All are invited to the gym to Pay to Pie! Pay $5 to throw a pie in either Katie Bartholomew or John Smoke's face. All proceeds will go toward the CROP walk and Feed My Starving Children.

CROP Walk: Another way to give

There is still a chance to sponsor Pastor Greta, Pastor Jim, or Youth Pastor Katie online before tomorrow's South DuPage CROP Hunger Walk, but there's another way you can contribute this weekend if you have a sweet tooth.

Oberweis DairyShop at Oberweis Dairy

Download the coupon below and take it to the Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store in Downers Grove on the weekend of the walk (October 13 to 15) and we’ll get up to 30% back on everything you buy!

You can find the store at the west end of the Dominick's center, adjacent to Office Depot, on Ogden Avenue, between Cass and Fairview [map].

Have you ever had a pie thrown in your face?

CROP Stop SignI haven’t, and as far as I know neither has John Smoke. Unfortunately for us, that is all about to change! You may have heard us engaging in some good-spirited competitive conversations or seen the posters on the church walls with pies surrounding our faces. This Sunday, pies will be thrown. But what’s it all about?

This Sunday, October 14th, First UMC is teaming up with churches and organization all around the area to walk in the annual CROP Walk. This walk drums up financial and moral support for a variety of organizations that seek to fight hunger in our local communities, our nation, and around the world. After hearing about the walk, I immediately knew I wanted to help out and was positive that others would, too. I talked to John and found out that he was positive others would want to help as well. We were both SO positive that we decided to enter into a friendly challenge between our ministries. So, this Sunday, whoever has more students from his or her ministry (for John that’s Kindergarteners-5th Grade, for me it’s 6th-12th graders) walking alongside him or her in the walk, gets to throw pies in the other person’s face.
