Friday Night at the Movies: This Boy's Life

On March 21, we move from the terrific Robert DeNiro comedy viewed in February to an equally compelling DeNiro drama, This Boy’s Life, which also stars Ellen Barkin and a young Leonardo DiCaprio. A 1993 release, the film is a true story based on the dysfunctional relationship between the teen-aged Tobias Wolff, his mother, Rosemary, and his abusive stepfather, Dwight.

Stan and Maria Clements will be our discussion leaders. The movie starts at 7:30pm. Please sign-up in the church office or using the form below starting March 1. We had a full house in February, so sign-up early to reserve your place, and let the office know if you need to cancel later on; we had a waiting list in February. As usual, popcorn, soft drinks, coffee and dessert are on hand; a $2 donation is suggested.

Friday Night at the Movies: Out of Africa

Out of Africa

November 15th, Movie Night at the "Slowdance Film Festival" continues with the 1985, Sydney Pollack classic Out of Africa. A study of the life of Danish noblewoman and storyteller Karen ('Isak') Dinesen Blixen (played by Meryl Streep), from her marriage and departure for Kenya in 1913 until her return to Denmark in 1931. As she struggles to maintain a coffee farm through various challenges and disasters, and strives to improve relations with the local natives, her marriage of convenience to a titled aristocrat (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer) gradually gives way to an enduring romance with the noted hunter and adventurer Denys Finch Hatton (played by Robert Redford).  Come see the film that won SEVEN Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director and Best Cinematography (on the Safford Big Screen, wow!) and cemented Meryl Streep's place in acting history!

Since space is limited, please sign up in the church office starting 11/1.      A $2.00 donation is suggested.  Discussion led by Sue Thornquist.

Friday Night at the Movies: Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook

Focusing on Mental Health Awareness, the Health and Wellness Work Area is pleased to present on October 18 Silver Linings Playbook, a well-received "romantic dramedy" released late in 2012.  Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro, it's the story of Pat Solitano, a former high school teacher moving in with his parents after a court-ordered eight-month stint in a mental health facility, where he has been treated for a bipolar disorder.  Pat wants to reconcile with his ex-wife, but then Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, comes into his life and, in the words of one reviewer, "here at last is a movie about real situations, real people, and the natural experiences that evolve from them."  Silver Linings Playbook received eight Academy Award nominations, including all four actor categories, with Jennifer Lawrence winning the Oscar for Best Actress.  A not-to-be-missed film!

As usual, soft drinks, snacks, and dessert will be served; a $2 donation is suggested.  Be sure to sign up using the form below or in the church office (starting October 1st) if you plan to attend, as seating is somewhat limited.  See you there!
