John CianciosiJohn Cianciosi was a Buddhist Monk for over 20 years, serving as spiritual director of monasteries in Thailand and Australia. He is currently the Resident Buddhist Teacher at the Theosophical Society. He is the author of The Meditative Path (Quest Books, 2001) and a student of the late Venerable Ajahn Chah.

Lenten Bible Studies

Holy BibleEven if you haven’t taken part in the evening Bible studies so far, you’re invited to try them out just during Lent!

The Wednesday evening study will be taking a look at Jesus’ life, teachings, miracles, death and resurrection, and what it means to follow him today. The Lenten focus will begin March 16, and continue on March 23, 30, April 6 and 13, from 6:30-7:30 each evening.

The Thursday evening study will share the Lenten Study, “The Jesus I Never Knew” by Phillip Yancey, beginning March 10 from 6:30-7:30, and continuing each Thursday night through April 14. Pastor Greta will be guiding both of the studies.

YAH: Wentz Concert Hall

The Young At Heart group is looking forward to going over to North Central College in Naperville to tour their new Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center on Wednesday, March 9. We will carpool from the church parking lot leaving at 9:45am and the tour will begin at 10:30am.

Following our tour we will have lunch on the campus in Kaufman Dining Hall. Each person will pay for their own lunch which will be $5.00 - $7.00. Plan to join us for this interesting tour. You may make a reservation in the Parlor on Sunday mornings or by contacting Marilou Welch.

Saturday Night at the Movies: 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of SummerThe Reverend John Smoke will present (500) Days of Summer, a 2009 offbeat romantic comedy about a young woman who doesn’t believe that true love exists and the young man who falls for her. Staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, the film garnered Golden Globe nominations for both Best Actor and Best Picture and received high praise from film critics such as Roger Ebert and Rex Reed.

Sign up now in the church office for this warm and touching movie! Popcorn, soft drinks, dessert and coffee will be served; a $2 donation is suggested.

Thank you for making the effort to bring your stickers to the church office so that UMW/Sarah circle could buy pots and pans. You may have only had a few to share, but all of them combined, a little over 920, bought a lot of pots and pans. We were able to buy for eleven cents- 5 stock pots and 6 frying pans. The Peoples Resource Center will be delighted to receive our donation.

Young at Heart Cancelled

The Young at Heart Pizza Party scheduled for this Wednesday, February 9 has been cancelled due to the weather. Too much snow and too cold!!! The next Young at Heart activity will be in March.

Tea ServiceOur annual Mother-Daughter Tea will be held on Saturday, March 19 from 2:00 to 4:00PM in the gym. Cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. Mark your calendars now!

Wanted: Aprons

The theme of the Mother-Daughter tea this year is APRONS. Do you have an apron that has a story or a history about it? Would you be willing to share it with us? We are looking for aprons in a variety of styles and from different time periods. Also, we are looking for dress forms to use to display them. If you have an apron or dress form you would be willing to loan to us, please contact Nancy Bifulco.

Thursday Bible Study

BiblePastor Greta McDonald leads this introductory course to the Bible. The group meets in Room 202 from 6:30 to 7:30pm each Thursday. All are welcome to come at any time. 

In January and February, they will be looking at the life of David.
