Friday Night at the Movies: This Boy's Life

On March 21, we move from the terrific Robert DeNiro comedy viewed in February to an equally compelling DeNiro drama, This Boy’s Life, which also stars Ellen Barkin and a young Leonardo DiCaprio. A 1993 release, the film is a true story based on the dysfunctional relationship between the teen-aged Tobias Wolff, his mother, Rosemary, and his abusive stepfather, Dwight.

Stan and Maria Clements will be our discussion leaders. The movie starts at 7:30pm. Please sign-up in the church office or using the form below starting March 1. We had a full house in February, so sign-up early to reserve your place, and let the office know if you need to cancel later on; we had a waiting list in February. As usual, popcorn, soft drinks, coffee and dessert are on hand; a $2 donation is suggested.

Friday Night at the Movies: Midnight Run

Midnight RunAction.  Comedy.  Crime.  Mystery.  Thriller.  Those are the genres named by Roger Ebert in his glowing review of Midnight Run, starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. De Niro plays Jack Walsh, who is a “skip-tracer,” a person who finds and brings back bail bondsmen clients who have tried to skip bail. Grodin plays Jonathan Mardukas, bail skipper. As Ebert says, “[they] spend most of the movie trying to survive….while the FBI is trying to capture them and the underworld is trying to kill them.”  Here we see De Niro unleash his considerable comedic talents; Grodin is every bit his equal.

Sue Thornquist will lead the lively discussion we’re sure to have after this extremely funny and delightful film. A $2 donation is suggested.

Friday Night at the Movies: Philadelphia

PhiladelphiaWe kick off the new year on January 17 with Philadelphia, a 1993 drama starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. This ground-breaking film, cited as the first Hollywood mainstream movie to address HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, and homophobia, is the story of Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a rising star senior associate in a highly prestigious Philadelphia law firm. Andrew’s life changes dramatically when his homophobic firm not only discovers he is a gay man but also learns he suffers from AIDS. In 1993, AIDS was a death sentence, its transmission still poorly understood by the general public. This emotionally powerful film garnered Oscars for Best Actor (Hanks) and Best Original Song (“Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen) as well as a host of other nominations and awards. In addition, watch for such veteran actors as Jason Robards and Joanne Woodward as well as [then] newcomers Antonio Banderas and Chandra Wilson, now playing Dr, Miranda Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy.

John Smoke will be our discussion leader. Sign up now in the church office. Snacks and desserts will be on hand; a $2 donation is suggested.

Silver Linings Playbook

Focusing on Mental Health Awareness, the Health and Wellness Work Area is pleased to present on October 18 Silver Linings Playbook, a well-received "romantic dramedy" released late in 2012.  Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro, it's the story of Pat Solitano, a former high school teacher moving in with his parents after a court-ordered eight-month stint in a mental health facility, where he has been treated for a bipolar disorder.  Pat wants to reconcile with his ex-wife, but then Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, comes into his life and, in the words of one reviewer, "here at last is a movie about real situations, real people, and the natural experiences that evolve from them."  Silver Linings Playbook received eight Academy Award nominations, including all four actor categories, with Jennifer Lawrence winning the Oscar for Best Actress.  A not-to-be-missed film!

As usual, soft drinks, snacks, and dessert will be served; a $2 donation is suggested.  Be sure to sign up using the form below or in the church office (starting October 1st) if you plan to attend, as seating is somewhat limited.  See you there!

Friday Night at the Movies: Big

Also starring Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Loggia, and directed by Penny Marshall, Big was nominated for 2 Oscars and garnered other film awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Hanks.

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.

Friday Night at the Movies: Save the Tiger

NEW DATE : Friday, May 24 at the Safford Home Theater

Discussion Leader: Carol Lysne

I saw this movie in 1973, 40 years ago. One scene in particular had a profound effect upon me and I never forgot it. When I learned we were showing academy award movies this season, I immediately remembered Jack Lemmon’s performance in Save the Tiger and wondered if it would still have the same impact on me. I watched it for the second time. It did.

Save the Tiger follows a day and a half in Harry’s life. Jack Lemmon plays Harry Stoner, the owner of a dress manufacturing business, who sees himself as a good citizen. Jack Gilford plays his friend and partner Phil Green. The two spar repeatedly over moral issues as Harry seeks to make his payroll and keep his business going. The movie repeatedly asks how important success is when we measure ourselves against our ideals. Save the Tiger explores what happens when we come to believe that the end can justify the means?

Jack Lemmon wanted to make this movie so much that he waived his usual fee and worked for scale, $165.00 a week. His performance as Harry Stoner won him an Oscar for best actor.

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.

Sign-up begins May 1 in the church office or using the form below.

Friday Night at the Movies: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Friday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. - Safford Home Theater

Our Oscar winners theme continues as Peg Schultz presents Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the title roles. Nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (George Roy Hill), the film took home 4 of the golden statuettes. It did even better in Britain, garnering several BAFTA awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Redford; Newman was also nominated), and Best Actress for Katharine Ross. Butch and “the Kid” really existed and this movie is based on fact. Did it really come out in 1969? It’s as fresh, funny, and engaging now as it was 44 years ago; the pairing of Newman and Redford is magic. A classic Western and then some!

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.

Sign-up begins April 1 in the church office or using the form below.
