Mission

Neighbors Helping Neighbors - Special S.O.S.

We once again have a unique opportunity to join together for a special one-day off-site S.O.S. mission trip on Saturday, October 21 to Berry United Methodist Church in Chicago.

Last November, a DGFUMC contingent spent a day at Berry doing landscaping, painting, electrical and other small carpentry and hand-on projects, alongside their own church members.  It was a wonderful experience, so the DGFUMC Board of Trustees and Missions, Justice and Community Work Area are going back this fall.

Possible jobs this time Include:

  • painting a basement corridor,
  • repairing pews in the sanctuary,
  • changing out some light fixtures,
  • addressing some plumbing issues,
  • fixing a small garden fence,
  • several other miscellaneous projects.

Located in the vibrant and diverse Lincoln Square community, Berry UMC is a struggling urban church which has many maintenance and repair needs.

Everyone is invited to participate. Bring your family and friends or come by yourself. We will meet at 8:00 a.m. and carpool to Chicago. We will plan on returning by 4:00 p.m.

Contact Don Dunham at don@dgfumc.org  if you are able to attend or want more information. Some painting supplies, tools and other materials may be needed.

Berry United Methodist Church - 4754 N. Leavitt, Chicago

Paul Webster

Paul WebsterPaul Webster, a United Methodist missionary in Zambia, will be with us this Sunday to share about the Mujila Falls Agricultural Center, a project that our congregation has been connected with through our special mission offerings.

The Center works to improve nutrition and increase income among the Lunda people of extreme North West Zambia. They have the highest infant mortality rate and lowest life expectancy of all the tribes in Zambia. The Center helps the Lunda people through egg and milk production, planting soybeans and corn, and community and educational efforts. The food production offers better nourishment for the people, and the small incomes made possible through improved farming allow families to send their children to school.

Paul will speak briefly about this world-impacting work in our worship services on Sunday, and all are invited to hear him share more fully about the Agricultural Center at a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at 11:15.

All Church Mission Trip

The Mission, Justice and Community Work Area is dedicated to reaching out to serve others and getting as many people as possible to become involved in connecting our members to each other and those in need. This inspired the idea of an All Church Mission Trip, where people of all ages (12 and above) can work, laugh and live life for a week together while helping others less fortunate. We will work as teams, growing bonds of fellowship and respect.

This July we will be traveling to inner-city Detroit to support Cass Community Social Services whose motto is: “Fighting Poverty. Creating Opportunity.” Started as an outreach ministry of Cass Community United Methodist Church, Cass Community Social Services (CCSS) works across the city in areas of concentrated poverty providing programs for food, health, housing and jobs.
